Skiing and other Winter Sports

Do you want to introduce your family or group to skiing, without having to commit to a full week in a dedicated ski resort at expensive package holiday prices?
Are you in a family or group that want different things out of a trip to the mountains in winter?
Perhaps you prefer to ski one day and sightsee or relax the next - or maybe just ski for a half day occasionally?
Possibly you're fed up with ski package trips with sub-standard accommodation and average food?
Then again, maybe you're looking for a mountain resort other than the Alps this year, with space to ski and smaller queues for the ski lifts?
If you have answered yes to one or more of the above questions, why not consider a stay at La Maison de Roquefort, less than 40 minutes from the French ski resort of Mont d'Olmes?
La Maison de Roquefort is a relaxing, friendly B&B (Chambres d'Hôtes) in the Ariège-Pyrenees region of Southern France.
Your hosts, Kay & Mike will go out of their way to ensure your holiday is a successful one, helping you to sort out ski hire and lift passes on the first day, showing you around the resort, preparing packed lunches, cooking you a welcoming evening meal, waxing and sharpening your skies, or perhaps guiding you to the many picturesque and historic places of interest in the area when you fancy a day off from skiing.
Kay and Mike's skiing experiences over the years have proven invaluable when deciding what to offer their winter guests, so be sure of a wonderfully warm and relaxing time and plenty of good hot food when you stay at La Maison de Roquefort.
Les Monts d'Olmes - Space to ski and a great resort for learners: |
   |
Travel times (car): approx. 40 minutes
Only 30 minutes from our chambres d'hôtes is Mont d'Olmes, a small but excellent French ski resort with a good range of Green (5), Blue (3) and Red (7) runs plus a great Black run, all spread over 23 kilometres.
Mont d'Olmes is popular for walkers in the summer and great for snowshoe and cross-country enthusiasts in the winter, due to its wide open piste and mountain-top walking areas. As a result, there is plenty of off-piste skiing for the more adventurous amongst you.
The Snow Park is a fabulous and safe area for younger skiers to experience the freestyle thrills of half-pikes and kickers, boardercross and rails.

Travel times (car): approx. 60 minutes
Ax-les-Thermes is an historic spa town, summer retreat and ski centre in the Ariège valley. Three ski resorts dominate the valley: Bonascre, Le Saquet and Campels. At the head of the valley is the small duty-free mountain state of Andorra (30 km from Ax). In the other direction, towards the lowlands, is the ancient town of Foix, with its 11th century castle.
Between Ax and Foix lies a magic landscape of deciduous forests, prehistoric caves, rivers and castles. This resort is approx 90 minutes from the airports of Toulouse and Carcassonne and only 60 minutes from La Maison de Roquefort.
The slopes at Bonascre, Campels and La Saquet have 70 km of signposted pistes, ranging from 1400m to 2400m in altitude. They are serviced by 34 lifts and telecabins and equipped with over 40 snow cannons. The pistes are accessible by the main telecabin from the centre of Ax itself.
Grandvalira, Andorra - Mix with the holiday skiers or shop till you drop!
Travel times (car): approx. 90 minutes
The largest ski domain in Andorra, Grandvalira includes the resorts of Canillo, El Tarter, Encamp, Grau Roig, Pas de la Casa and Soldeu.
Perched atop the Pyrenean range is the tiny principality of Andorra. As a ski resort Andorra made its name in the 80's as a cheap and cheerful place for good skiing and partying but ran into trouble in later years due to poor access roads and over-keen building projects. Things have settled down now with better quality hotels and well-cleared access roads and tunnel links.
Pas de la Casa is right on the French border. From there you can access the whole Grandvalira area by ski-lift - Soldeu and El Tarter included. Pas de la Casa is lively and bristling with shops selling duty-free goods. Drink remains duty-free, of course, so there's still quite a bit of partying but it is a great resort to visit on a day out from our chambre d'hôte.
